MICHIGAN SPOUSAL SUPPORT ATTORNEY
Spousal support is different than child support in that the Judge has discretion to award it or not. There are several factors that the Court will consider when deciding whether to award spousal support, and it is important to understand what those factors are and how the Court may weigh them. Our attorneys have the experience and knowledge to effectively present the facts of your case and advocate for a fair outcome.
HOW IS SPOUSAL SUPPORT DETERMINED?
Unlike child support, there is no set formula for determining spousal support in Michigan. Instead, the Court considers the unique facts and circumstances of each case. Depending on the situation, the Court may award temporary or long-term spousal support, or determine that an award is not appropriate.
When deciding whether to award spousal support, the Court may consider factors such as:
- The length of the marriage
- The age and health of each spouse
- Each spouse’s income and earning ability
- The standard of living established during the marriage
- The needs and financial circumstances of each spouse
- The contributions of each spouse during the marriage
- Other factors the Court determines are relevant
